This past week there has been swirling comment about bonuses on Wall Street, and my suburban Connecticut friends have been telling me about AIG neighbors who are feeling alternately angry, insecure, or shamed. I agree the system of bonuses was all wrong and that Wall Street types have to get connected to the real world [...] There are two items in the news this week that caught my attention. One talks about the use of over a billion dollars from the new Federal Government stimulus package to assess which widely used medical treatments are really best (NYT 2/16/09, “US to Study Effectiveness of Treatments”). Here we go once again with two things that really bug me: 1) doctors are featured as experts and there is no patient on the panel and 2) it makes health concerns entertainment, putting an emphasis on [...] There’s more chatter lately (see the Seattle Times, The Newest Generation of Drugs: Who Can Afford Them?) about the cost of the growing list of biotech drugs “(“biologics”) that can lengthen your life and/or improve the quality of your life when you are living with an advanced cancer or a long-term chronic illness like multiple [...] I produced my first patient education program, a video on “erectile dysfunction” (that’s another story), back in 1984 (That was the year my assistant producer, Blake, was born!).
